Bellows are flexible piping components designed to absorb thermal expansion and contraction in piping systems caused by temperature fluctuations. The corrugated structure of the bellows provides the flexibility required to accommodate axial, lateral, and angular movements while maintaining system integrity.

The number and geometry of corrugations are carefully determined based on the expected displacement and the expansion or contraction forces that the bellows must absorb. In addition to providing flexibility, bellows must be engineered to withstand the design and operating pressures of the piping system. While bellows absorb thermal movement, the thrust forces generated by internal pressure must be restrained by external anchors, guides, or other support structures rather than by the bellows themselves.

The pressure thrust force of a bellows is typically calculated by multiplying the effective cross-sectional area by the internal pressure of the piping system.
